Betty Makoni, founder of the nonprofit organization, Girl Child Network.
Description

Herself a survivor of rape, leader Betty Makoni has worked tirelessly for the benefit of girls who have been victims of rape in her home country of Zimbabwe. Rape is occurring at epidemic proportions in Zimbabwe, fueled by the myth that sex with young virgins is a cure for HIV/AIDS. Makoni is an advocate for these girls — but she's not satisfied with just talking about the problem.

Through the Girl Child Network, which she set up in Zimbabwe, Makoni has helped rescue 35,000 girls from abuse. Host Peggy Wehmeyer spoke with Makoni from London, where the activist is currently living in exile.
