Description
Mention the word "poverty," and Japan is not a country that quickly comes to mind. But Japan was hit harder than most major economies by the global economic crisis. Charles McJilton founded the organization Second Harvest nine years ago after he discovered that many Japanese charities refuse to admit the country has a poverty problem, or that people go hungry.
Supermarkets, restaurants, and other businesses donate food items that, for cosmetic reasons, are deemed unsalable. Last year, Second Harvest delivered 850 tons of food to those in need. Jason Strother reports from Tokyo.
