Untouchables in the Kitchen
Description

In India, the Dalits, so-called "Untouchables," have occupied the lowest rung of the social ladder for thousands of years. Under India's caste system, they're stuck with unwanted jobs, such as cleaning latrines or sweeping the streets. They certainly aren't allowed in the kitchens of higher caste members.

Although India's Supreme Court struck down legislation that promoted affirmative action for Dalits, the situation is beginning to change. Miranda Kennedy reports on one family making changes close to home.
