Keepsakes From TunisiaMegan Williams/World Vision Report
Relics that washed ashore or were found in boats are on display at the migrant museum of Lampedusa.
Description
Amid mounting civil strife and the burden of decades of poverty, thousands of Tunisians have recently crossed the Mediterranean to the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa. Italy's interior minister has called the situation a humanitarian crisis and the boatloads of Tunisians a "biblical exodus."
Lampedusa has long been a destination as a first foothold in Europe for those seeking a better life. The island is just 70 miles off the Tunisian coast, but, as Megan Williams reports from Lampedusa, Tunisians are risking their lives to get there.
