Description
Dimi Mint Abba, known as the "diva of the desert," is Mauritania's most famous singer. She was born into the Igwaggin caste of musicians, a Mauritanian caste that traditionally entertained while also serving as historians, soothsayers, poets, and social commentators through song.
Mauritanian music combines haunting Arabic-style vocals with West African instruments. Using her songs as modern commentary, Abba's lyrics often deal with issues of creativity and non-violence. In addition to singing, Abba plays the ardin, which sounds similar to a harp, as well as the tidnit, a type of lute. Because of her musical skill and powerful voice, she has gained not only international musical popularity but also cultural clout at home and abroad.
