Zapatista dolls for sale in San Cristóbal, Chiapas.
Description
Sixteen years ago, masked rebels from the Zapatista Army of National Liberation launched surprise attacks against the Mexican government in the southern state of Chiapas. The uprising lasted almost two weeks before the military pushed them back into the jungle.
The Zapatistas claimed to be representing the poor, indigenous communities in the region. So for the past 16 years, Mayan women in San Cristobal de las Casas have been capitalizing on the movement's popularity by selling handmade Zapatista souvenirs to curious tourists.
Our Mexico correspondent Grant Fuller brings us a Street Vendor profile of one of these women.
