Doctor GaoDescription
China has come a long way in acknowledging that it has an AIDS problem. Today there are televisions campaigns to teach about HIV, something that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
AIDS first appeared in China in the early 1980s, and it spread rapidly. But few people dared speak openly about the disease. One notable exception was Dr. Gao, a retired physician who has won praise in China and abroad for her courageous stand. In fact, Hillary Clinton singled out Dr. Gao at a meeting with women's rights activists during the Secretary of State's trip to China last month. Chinese authorities, however, still treat Dr. Gao like a criminal. Ruth Kirchner went to visit her in the province of Henan.
