Disaster Myths

When natural disaster strikes, we all want to help those affected. After an earthquake struck China, aid groups rushed to provide food and rescue survivors.

But David Alexander, a professor at the University of Florence in Italy and an expert on disaster relief, says that's not what we should be doing. Instead we should be teaching people how to respond in their own community, he says, instead of relying on outside help to arrive.
