Description
Laura Kabasomi Kakoma (Somi) uses music to explore what it is to be an immigrant with ties to two worlds.
Somi is the daughter of East Africans, but she was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois. After college, she lived for several years in Kenya and Tanzania. She now lives in New York, but tours frequently in Africa.
Her music is a haunting blend of cultures and languages. She sings in four of them. She calls her style "new African jazz and soul."
She visited with Peggy Wehmeyer.
